Tommy Boy Reunion Show A Huge Success!

The Montreux Jazz Festival is a two week celebration of music’s greatest artists. It’s held every summer in Montreux, Switzerland overlooking Geneva. This year’s festivities included such legends as Sting, Carlos Santana, Chaka Khan, B.B. King, Bootsy Collins, and Quincy Jones. Also scheduled were Mos Def and Masta Ace. There was a huge Miles Davis tribute show and you could find a hip hop dj playing each night till well into the next morning. No matter genre of preference every evening the lineups were crazy! Tommy Boy Records was a major force in music during hip hop’s golden era of the 80’s and 90’s. They boasted some of hip hop’s most powerful acts such as De La Soul, Queen Latifah, Stetsasonic, Naughty By Nature, and of course Digital Underground. It was only right that the label commanded their own night to commemorate the 30th year anniversary of their inception. Orchestrated by founder Tom Silverman, the event was filled with the four element hip hop which include rapping, djing, breakdancing, and graffiti. The show’s bill included Dj’s Afrika Bambaataa, and producer Prince Paul spinning the crowd into a frenzy with their individual sets while groups House Of Pain, Digital Underground, Naughty By Nature, and Coolio wowed the crowd of 4,000 with hit after hit. The breakdancers were¬† from around the world including members of the iconic Rock Steady Crew and the Bay area’s legendary Demons Of The Mind. They were also creatively directed by Michael Holman of Graffiti Rock and New York City Breaker fame. Needless to say the show went without a hitch and if you love classic hip hop you were in ecstasy. I’ve posted pictures of our time at the festival. You can also check out the video clip I filmed onstage while Naughty By Nature tore it down! Enjoy.
